How-to guide
How to explain a complex topic simply: a method for teachers and trainers
To explain a complex topic simply, start from what the learner already knows, give one concrete example, name the idea in plain words and check understanding by asking a question. Teachrity lets teachers practise with AI students who say they do not understand.
Start from what they know
A new idea lands when it attaches to an old one. Begin with a familiar situation and move toward the concept.
One example, not three
Several examples blur. Choose a single vivid case and return to it.
Plain words first, term second
Say it simply, then give the technical name. Jargon first makes learners stop listening.
Check, do not assume
Ask a short question that requires the learner to use the idea. If they cannot, re-explain with a different example.
Practise with an interrupting listener
Explain aloud to someone who says I do not follow. Each interruption shows where your explanation skipped a step.
Sample exchange
A pupil says she does not understand
AI pupilI do not get why ice floats.
TeacherWhat happens when you put a bottle of water in the freezer?
AI pupilIt gets bigger.
TeacherSo the same water takes more space as ice, which makes it lighter, so it floats.
Illustrative script written to show the format. It is not a transcript of a real learner.
